Termites, Beneficial or Destructive

By Brian Reynolds of Reynolds Pest Management, Inc.

Is it a termite or just a flying ant? Many Florida residents often mistake subterranean termites for white ants or flying ants by their swarming behaviors. That could be a costly mistake Subterranean Termites are estimated to cause approximately $2 Billion in damage a year in the US alone! Without the help of a professional exterminating team like Reynolds Pest Management identifying these termites can be difficult.

I don’t see any signs of termite damage my house has not been affected, right? Not necessarily, make no mistake identifying a Subterranean Termite infestation is complicated. Termites will consume the wood from the inside out making the wood to appear normal and unaffected. Subterranean Termites found in Florida are known to infest anything from homes, boats, trees or buildings. Be sure to get help from a professional exterminator to inspect all
your properties and structures.

Overall, there are approximately 4,000 species of termites. Many species of termites dwell in tropical, semi-tropical, or hot and humid climate such as, you guessed it, Florida! Here’s how a typical colony found in Florida works. Colonies contain nymphs (young termites), soldiers, workers, and reproductive individuals of both genders. It is not uncommon to find colonies containing several egg-laying queens. Mature colonies of subterranean termites can house several hundred to several million individuals. The swarming of Termites is the reproductive stage of the insect. Swarm season begins in late February and early March and when the humidity level and temperature are adequate, the reproductive termites surface from the tunnels built by workers and nymphs emerging out of the ground with the instinct to find a mate they then get back in the ground and produce a new colony. Termite colonies will immediately begin birthing a new generation of swarmers for the next season. It is imperative to get Termite Control before they repeat their cycles.

Subterranean Termites are frail and need to stay moist to live, and our wet seasons here in Florida are ideal for them to thrive. Ants and other predators can easily demolish a termite colony to avoid these hazards, but termites will cover their trails with tubing called mud tubes. They are made of feces, saliva, plant matter, and soil. These mud tubes also keep the colony concealed and safe from unfavorable weather conditions. Mud tubes are easily noticed in the wooded areas right here in Florida. These shelter tubes can extend for many feet, such as up the outside of a tree. To avoid these mounds or tubes on your home, contact a local exterminator to eradicate the colonies and to prevent them from appearing in the future.

Subterranean termites benefit the environment tremendously especially in our state reserves found right here in Florida. By termites consuming wood they help to break down decaying tree trunks, branches and other dead plant matter in forests. Termites are the only insect on earth that can break down wood on a mass scale. Without them the fallen or dead trees would build up and kill off the forest. You can look at it as natures way of “cleaning house” in the forest.

The first step of solving an infestation of termites is locating them with the help of an extermination team. Reynolds Pest Management has the knowledge of the life cycle and can recognize infestation signs of termites as well as preventive and control measures. Reynolds Pest offers the most reasonable price and dependable termite extermination on Florida’s Coast. Protect your property; termite prevention and control is critical in order to decrease the damage caused by Subterranean Termites.
