Safely Prepare Your South Florida Landscape for Spring

By Brian Reynolds of Reynolds Pest Management, Inc.

Now that we are past our freezing months in Florida, we can begin to plan for the revival of our landscape including lawns, palms, and shrubs. It is very important to follow the guidelines for your lawn and trees for each season. Not understanding what is required or not required by your landscape at the appropriate times can lead to a distressed landscape.
Your Lawn, as always, should have a set mow height to decrease the chance of scalping or burning of your lawn. Many times you may notice a lawn to appear bear and brown (spring or summer) which is caused from over mowing and improper blade height. Keeping the height at a correct measure will also aid its ability to maintain adequate amount of moisture. Keeping your grass blades height perfect keeps the sun from evaporating large quantities of water or moisture in the soil.
Correct and appropriate fertilizer can start to be applied to lawns in the recommended application methods typically found on the labeling. It is highly recommended to use fertilizers with very little or no phosphorous. Many times if you have a local lawn care company who treats your lawn, they may perform certain tests that may indicate the need for additional phosphorous. To provide your lawn with nutrients longer, utilize a controlled-released nitrogen fertilizer. These fertilizers will provide your lawn with the adequate nutrients for much longer periods.
This is the season to begin the fertilization process for your trees or shrubs as well. If you decide on applying the fertilizer yourself, always read the application amounts. Be sure to use evenly on any tree or bush. Then apply an appropriate amount of water to minimize the chance of death. Mulch is a great way to reserve the moisture in the soil for your shrubs or tress. Applying it may also decrease the amount of weeds.
Many warm weather weeds will begin to grow I the next few months. Applying a pre-emerging weed killer is acceptable in this season. Utilizing “pre-emerging” weed killer prevents the germination of warm seasoned weeds. Reframe from using a weed and feed products, it is unnecessary.

The University of Florida recommends these easy tips for optimum health for your lawn or trees:
• Use the correct amount of irrigation; typically based on the amount of rainfall received.
• Inspect for pests or diseases on all areas of your landscape.
• For gardeners, it is good to de-head any dead flowers from plants to promote new growth.
Appropriate Mow Heights for Spring:
• St. Augustine & Bahia: 3-4”
• Centipede: 1.5-2.0”
• Dwarf St. Augustine: 2.5”
